The History of Signage
Who created signage?
The Romans were the first to recognise how valuable signage is, and introduced the first road sign system to show distances and direction.
The use of commercial signage has a very ancient history.
As commerce, trade and wealth grew, artistic trade signs were developed. Outdoor signs date back to Roman and Greek times, which developed from 3000 BC to 500 AD and at that time were made of wood, stone, leather and terra cotta.
They were used to advertise and ever since, signage has been an important part of everyday life which has evolved with modern materials and the use of technology.
The signage industry has gone through a huge amount of change over the years but traditional signage still plays a key part in advertising shop fronts and other areas. Shopfronts, banners, billboards, street signs, A boards and vehicle wrapping graphics continue to be popular and evolving ways of conveying key messaging. Digital signage is now also transforming the way messages are communicated.
